My Life on 35mm #13: Kodak Gold 200 | June 2019

Hello everyone! Another week, another roll of film!

We’ve finally arrived at the rolls shot on Sam’s camera, which he has so kindly let me borrow while I’m working on getting the OM-1 sorted out.

I’m using Sam’s Nikon FG and I’ve loved shooting on it thus far. For starters, I have been using his 28mm 2.8 lens. I have always had a lens like this for the OM-1 but never used it, and have been loving getting a bit wider than you can with a 50mm.

I’ve loved having a working light meter finally more than anything else. Even better than that though is shooting semi automatic, a feature introduced well after the OM-1. What this means for me is setting up a shot ends up being really similar to shooting with my D750, just a smidge more manual. I also have the benefit of having an exposure comp dial, which is something I’m so used to utilising in my D750 too. It’s a lot more instinctive rather than overthinking everything for each photo I take.

There is also this lovely sense of calm in knowing the exposure is probably all good that I haven’t had in a while haha. Guessing, whilst always being educated, was a bit stressful. My favourite feature by far is that the camera actually beeps at you when you have to adjust your aperture to ensure a correct exposure. I didn’t hear it a few times during this roll which is why there are a couple of over exposed shots, but i’ll put that down to not really thinking to look out for it since it was my first time shooting with it. It takes the stress off everything though, it basically just tells you when you’re not paying attention.

I’m overall really enjoying shooting with it and it’s nice having a camera in the Nikon family like I’m used to.

Now to the film choice for this roll. I bought a couple of rolls of Kodak Gold recently since I’ve never tried it and its pretty cheap, and that was the first thing I pulled out of my little stockpile of film when I went to load up the Nikon. Partly because I was keen to try it out, and partly because I thought it was the only thing I had left other than my roll of Velvia (set aside for a specific shoot with Sam) and my other roll of expired film (set aside for a special occasion). I was wrong about this second point though, as I had another roll of C200 like last weeks post sitting in the collection. I promptly shot it after the Kodak Gold to compare the colours to the OM-1, and that post will be next week.

In any case, I enjoyed how the shots came out from this (when they were exposed correctly). It really is just a nice classic every day film that makes everything look nice with that warmth.

Another roll down! I' have one more stockpiled, but my goal for the next week is to shoot a few more and ship them off to The Black and White Box for developing so I can try and keep this weekly (ish), or weekly as long as Sam is okay with me borrowing his camera.

Let me know on Instagram (slide into those DM’s) what roll of film I should buy next! I’m going to have to buy some in the next month or so if I’m going to keep the pace up!
